Sarla Nichols, Director of Midtown Yoga offers The Art of Teaching Vinyasa Yoga for students who want to deepen their practice, teachers who want to enhance their skills, and students who are committed to becoming yoga teachers.

The Art of Teaching Vinyasa Yoga at Midtown Yoga begins January, 2010. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory for those students seeking certification.

Developing and Deepening Your Personal Practice
Explore the importance of personal practice as the foundation and creative source for teaching as well as understanding proper sequencing in vinyasa yoga.

This weekend will focus on Anatomy. Maggie Reese who is one of our long time teachers and who is now finishing her doctorate in Physical Therapy will teaching Anatomy. This weekend is open to any otherMidtown Yoga teachers who would like to attend. Please call me, Sarla, for details.
March 19 – March 21, 2010 Brenna Geehan workshop
We will discuss sequencing of asanas, what pranayama practices are appropriate for your skill level and a way into a meditation practice. We will also discuss some of the excellent yoga books that will be helpful for your personal growth.
CLASS 1: Friday Evening 6:00 �— 8:30 pm Part 1: The Art of Asana Sequencing In this class we will learn how to map out an asana practice using the the philosophy of Vinyasa Krama. The concept of vinyasa krama tells us that it is not enough to simply take a step; that step needs to take us in the right direction and be made in the right way. We will discuss the energetics of asana and practice a well-balanced sequence. Each student will receive a template of this sequence to take home and modify to meet ones needs.
Part 2: Meeting our Personal Needs Every day we have different needs that can be addressed in our yoga practice. With our understanding of sequencing and the energetics of asana, we will learn how to modify our daily practice to encourage balance within. 3 hours
CLASS 2: Saturday Morning 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Brahmana: Modifying our Practice to Energize We will modify our practice to invoke more energy and fire to combat lethargy and lack of motivation. 2.5 hours
CLASS 3: Saturday Afternoon 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Langhana: Modifying our Practice to De-Stress In this class, we will modify our practice in order to reduce fatigue and anxiety. 2.5 hours
CLASS 4: Sunday Morning 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Samana: Digesting and Assimilating Stimulus We will practice Samana, a well-balanced practice, that will assist in everyday assimilation and digestion physically and mentally. 2.5 hours

April 16 – April 18, 2010
Teaching Standing Poses
Explore all the aspects of teaching the various standing poses, starting with the foundation and moving to a deeper understanding of the articulation of the poses both in and out of the vinyasa flow.
Seated Poses, Forward Bends and Twists
Learn how to teach a variety of seated poses, forward bends and twists. Students will look at asana foundations, seeing and understanding bodies and the principles of adjusting these poses, and their placement in the vinyasa flow.

Inversions, Chanting, Mudras, Pranayama and Meditation, and their effects on human physiology.
June 18 – June 20, 2010
*Learn seated poses, forward bends and twists starting with their foundations. We will discuss the proper placement of each of these poses in the vinyasa flow and examine the principles of sdjusting students.
July 23 – July 25th, 2010
The Deeper Postures
Explore back bends, breaking them down from the whole to the parts to more effectively understand these asanas. Discuss in detail the yoga sutras.
August 20 – August 22, 2010
Practice Teaching and The Bhagavad Gita
Learn how to enhance your teaching skills, including your conscious use of language, themes, sequencing, and adjustments. Includes an exploration of the archetypes found in the Bhagavad Gita.
September 17 – September 19, 2010
This final weekend will include specific instruction on the teaching principles of Kids yoga, Prenatal yoga, and yoga for the larger body. Students will also take their written exams. Students will continue to explore teaching skills to prepare everyone to teach a certification class. A restorative yoga class will be included.
Certification
Once the classroom work is finished, each student will teach a one-hour All levels Vinyasa Yoga Class to be completed before September 28, 2010. Graduation will take place on Sunday, September 28th. At this time each student will receive a certificate which can then be duplicated and sent to Yoga Alliance for full certification. (There is a fee of $40 paid to YA this time.)

Activities beyond the Weekends
The Jim Bennitt Workshop, The Tools of Trantic Yoga, is included in this training. Dates: Janaury 23-25th.
The Brenna Geehan Workshop is included in the training. Dates: April 17-19th.
h2. Classroom Requirements
- Students will attend three asana classes each week at Midtown Yoga for the duration of the training. (There is no additional charge.)
- Students will observe a beginner as well as an all levels class. The specific times will be assigned.
- Students will form small groups to practice teaching and to study together.
- Students are required to assist in three beginner classes and one all levels class.
