PROGRAM

Midtown Yoga is proud to offer The Art of Teaching Vinyasa Yoga for students who want to deepen their practice, teachers who want to enhance their skills and students who are committed to becoming yoga teachers.

COST

$3,300 for applicants who sign up and pay in full before December 1, 2011.
$3,500 after December 1, 2011. This amount is due by January, 1, 2012.
Cost for Certification Program is non-refundable.

SCHEDULE

The Art of Teaching Vinyasa Yoga will begin on January 6, 2012. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory for those students seeking certification.

January 6th – 8th, 2012

Developing and Deepening Your Personal Practice
The Heart of Yoga

Explore the importance of personal practice as the foundation and creative source for teaching as well as understanding proper sequencing in vinyasa yoga.
This weekend will be taught by Sarla Nichols.

March 2nd – 4th, 2012

The Foundations of Teaching Vinyasa Yoga
Yoga Mastering the Basics

Learn how to teach step backs, Surya Namaskar A and B, and all the standing poses. Look closely at how to teach the poses which make up Surya Namaskar A and B. Explore all the aspects of teaching the various standing poses starting with the foundation and moving to a deeper understanding of the articulation of these poses both in an out of the vinyasa flow.
This weekend will be taught by Shantih Smythe.

April 27th – 29th, 2012

Chanting, Mudras, Pranayama, and Meditation
The Path of Fire and Light Volume I

Learn and practice basic meditation and pranayama techniques and discuss their effects on human physiology. Review of Surya Namaskar A & B as well as the standing poses.
This weekend will be taught by Sarla Nichols.

June 22nd – 24th, 2012

Seated Poses, Forward Bends and Twists
The Wisdom of No Escape

Learn how to teach a variety of seated poses, forward bends and twists. We will also look at the proper placement of each of these poses in the vinyasa flow. Each of these poses has a particular physiological and mental effect depending on their placement in the practice.

July 20th – 22nd, 2012

Inversions, Prana Vayus and Bandhas
The Art of Joyful Living

Learn how to safely practice and teach handstand, headstand, shoulder stand and pincha mayurasana, and how each of these postures effects the prana vayus. Learn how to assist and adjust students in these postures. Practice and discuss bandhas.
This weekend will be taught by Grace Harwood.

August 10th -12th, 2012

Yoga Sutras and Backbends
The Four Chapters On Freedom

Learn how to safely, effectively and efficiently sequence a back bending class. Discuss the Yoga Sutras in detail. How can these ancient teachings impact our lives today?
This weekend will be taught by Lacy Apperson.

September 14th – 16th, 2012

Anatomy and Physiology
The Anatomy Coloring Book
(Maggie will send out an assignment.)

Spend 20 hours learning how the yoga postures we do and teach effect the nervous system. You will also look closely at the anatomy of the basic asanas and learn why alignment is so important. ***The schedule for this weekend will be different from the rest because Yoga Alliance requires that you have 20 hours of anatomy and physiology to be certified.
This weekend will be taught by Maggie Reese.

October 12th – 14th, 2012

Practice Teaching and the Bhagavad Gita
The Bhagavad Gita

Learn how to enhance your teaching skills with the use of conscious language like linking verbs; the importance of themes; and how to refine a class sequencing in preparation for mediation. Includes in depth discussion of The Bhagavad Gita.
This weekend will be taught by Chris Coniaris.

November 5, 2012 (Saturday only)

We will meet one last time to take the written exam and to field questions about the classes you will be teaching. You will have an opportunity to share your class plan with fellow students who will give you feedback. This will help you to be more fully prepared to teach your class for certification.
This day will be taught by Sarla Nichols.

CERTIFICATION

Once the classroom work is finished, each student will be required to teach a one hour All Levels class. These classes must be taught by November 15th, 2012. At the time of graduation, each student will be presented with a certificate verifying completion of all requirements necessary to comply with Yoga Alliance standards. This certificate can then be copied and sent, with a fee, to Yoga Alliance to apply for official certification.

Hours Outside the Weekend Classroom Requirements

  1. Students will attend three asana classes each week at Midtown Yoga for the duration of the training. (There is no additional charge.)
  2. Students will observe a Beginner class as well as an All Levels class. The specific times will be assigned.
  3. Students will form small groups to practice teaching and to study.
  4. There will be home work assignments, including book reports, which must be completed for certification.
